The Architect Manifesto

Posted: 31 Aug 2012 11:49 AM PDT

Software architecture is a well defined profession. It was in existence ever since computers were first created in the 1940s and software needed to be developed for them. While it became more formalized only in the 1980s, the profession took huge steps forward in the last 30 years. Today, the world of software architecture includes such disciplines as Enterprise Architecture, SOA, integration architecture, system architecture, data architecture, security architecture, etc. Yet, despite all of its different facets, software architecture core practices, goals, and approaches remain the same across all of its disciplines.

There are several key principles that help us become successful as software architects. No matter what problems we face, no matter what types of solution we need to apply, no matter what technologies we use, these general guidelines should always be followed. This forms the basis for the Architect Manifesto.

My research indicates that there have been multiple attempts at defining an Architect Manifesto. None of them seem to have succeeded or gained traction. Yet, I am certain that we, as architects, need the guiding light of a set of principles that will guide us in everything we do. We already unconsciously understand and follow them, but a formal definition will strengthen and inspire us. This is my attempt at verbalizing what we already know and apply in everyday work – the Architect Manifesto.

We, software architects, guide the design and evolution of computer systems. We strive to achieve maximum value for our business partners through this work. We constantly discover better ways to architect systems. As a result, we have come to value:

Simplicity over complexity
Pragmatism over perfectionism
Thinking out of the box over applying the same approaches to every problem
Developing technology agnostic solutions over making technology driven decisions
Delivering solutions to the business problems over concentrating purely on technology deliverables
Looking at the big picture over getting too deep into details
Long term, strategic thinking over short term, tactical thinking

I would appreciate feedback from all of the architects out there to make this manifesto more complete and relevant.

Husbands Say The Darndest Things.

Posted: 26 Jun 2012 11:05 AM PDT

"Your hair adds more mass to your face, when you wear it down."

Boy is this kid a charmer....he's lucky he's cute. This was said the other morning when I was finished getting ready for work. I still wore my hair down.
In his defense my grandpa used to say I looked pretty with my hair up. Ha.

The Renting Blues

Posted: 25 Jun 2012 09:52 AM PDT

Lately we've had the renters blues over here. We have been renting since July 2008, and we are over it. Yet, we aren't officially ready to settle down. We've been looking at houses online, exploring new areas of Rhode Island, and of course Boston and New York are always in the picture. To buy or not to buy.....
Oh, I should probably mention that we aren't the handiest people in the world. I mean, we can put together furniture, from Ikea....and we've never mowed a lawn. So many it's just best we stick to a condo in a city......

And now I bombard you with what I want our house/condo to look like, if and when we buy one. Courtesy of Pinterest of course!

Open concept and an exposed brick wall is a must. VIA
Because this is just too fun not to want! VIA
Nuff said..VIA
Because I wish I could be this organized. VIA
Bathroom weakness: Claw-foot bathtubs. VIA
Do you see those beams?! And the wood counters.... VIA
Grey and white is my favorite for bedrooms. VIA
Happy Monday!

Weekend: Bristol, RI

Posted: 19 Jun 2012 07:24 PM PDT

This past Sunday we ventured over to Bristol, RI...known as the most patriotic town in America(in case you didn't know, because who wouldn't?!) We walked through some of the most incredible antique stores, watched hundreds of boats, saw one of the biggest dogs I'd ever seen- in person that is, and chowed down on some fantastic seafood. Oh, and we bought these AMAZING portuguese rolls from a local bakery. We have decided that it's our new future hometown....well, it's battling Boston for number 2, because good ole NYC will always be numero uno.

Temple Run

Posted: 02 May 2012 07:43 PM PDT

Dear Temple Run,

You have taken over my life. I spend all of my down time playing you...yet, I'm still no good at all. My friends 4 year old is better than I am- so is her boyfriend- and my husband. I should delete you off my phone so I can get on with my life, but I can't. So until I get good, or beat you(highly unlikely) you will be taking up countless hours of my life.

Sincerely,
Addicted.

P.S. You also suck the battery out of my phone.

Date Night: Macera's

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 06:44 AM PDT

Starter: Calamari w/ hot peppers
Happy Monday! We've been spoiled around here lately. You see, it's not often we get an entire day together...I work weekends, he sometimes works weekends. Last weekend, we had Saturday, this past weekend, Sunday. We sleep in, go to lunch, you know nothing too exciting...but it's nice. However, this is about Friday night. When I came home from work we headed to dinner at Macera's. We first discovered this little place when we went for my brother-in-law's birthday. It's like love at first taste. The first time I ordered the gnocchi w/ pink vodka, which was going to be incredibly hard too top and I almost ordered it again. But my eye was caught by the pasta w/ mushrooms. I have this thing for mushrooms-I love them, LOVE. I could eat this dish everyday. The husband ordered the chicken & broccoli, which also had baby shrimp...good stuff. But of course mine was better:)

Can we talk about how embarrassed he gets when I whip out the phone to take pictures...I mean really, he's lucky I don't bring along the Nikon.
This dinner was delicious and dessert was almost ordered, almost.
If you're ever in Cranston, RI...but really, unless you live here why would you be? I highly recommend. It's basically like you're eating in your Italian grandmothers basement....that is if you have one.
When we got home we raced to the door, and I pulled a back/neck muscle. Yeah. It was bad, worst pain ever. All is good now.
What a way to end the night, right?!

Just a quick post to say...I love this kid so much. So much that I woke up WAY early this morning (we're talking 5:45) so we could ride down to work together. So early, that I went to the gym and was still 2 hours early for work. Now, if that isn't love....I don't know what is;)

Also, how cute is this about Karl Lagerfeld?

Happy Wednesday y'all!

The Year Of The Cake

Posted: 03 Apr 2012 02:25 PM PDT

This past Thursday(March 29) I turned 26. Yup,that's right I'm officially heading into my "late twenties," or somy sister likes to remind me. I've always been a big birthday person and neverbelieved people when they say your birthday's change as you get older. Lastyear, I did a countdown starting a month in advance. This year, time got away from me and if it wasn'tfor my family, I probably would have forgotten.
But back to the purpose of this post. This year wasthe year of the cake....and by that I mean I ended up with 3 cakes. HUGE cakes.

My parents came up for the week and on Sunday(March 25) both familieswent to dinner. Enter cake #1...
"Death By Chocolate," six layers of chocolatey goodness
(We ate cake every night until this past Saturday)
On Saturday my parents headed home, and we had some friends over tocelebrate. Enter cakes #2 and #3.....
"The Giant Cupcake," we haven't had a chance to cut this one yet
"Heath Bar Crunch Cake," 5 layers of yummy goodness, with Heath Bits
(Still eating)
As of right now we have:
1 slice of "Death By Chocolate"
1/4 left of "Heath Bar Crunch"
1 whole "Giant Cupcake"
